Keep looking after her, taking good care of her, all through the years that will come,
Keep looking after our mum.

At just 26, 21 and 19 three brothers we went off to war.
We had visions of glory, of duty and rite as we left mum and dad at the door.
We went for adventure, to stand up and fight for the family we left back at home.
With our pack and our gun we set off for the war, I could not leave my brothers alone.

Chorus:
Dear mother & father we're sending this letter to tell you our training is done.
We're on leave here together, don't worry we're fine, we're off into town for some fun.
We remembered the promise we made dear old dad not to gamble or drink to excess.
To look after each other, remember you both, and treasure that bond we possess.
Three brothers we lay at the end of the day on beds made of feathers not boards.
But our leave's at an end and tomorrow they send us to far away places abroad.

When we landed they sent us to battles apart, but our brotherly bond will endure.
We went straight into fight, oh my God what a sight, I can never forget this I'm sure.
There are men who lay dying and dead, they are lying on bayonet, barbed wire and gun.
But don't worry dear dad we'll take care of ourselves, you just keep looking after our mum.

Do not make me face this terrible place, I can't take the pain any more.
I long for the touch of my mother and brother. Hell, why am I here in this war?
There were thousands of men who came out here to fight, now thousands lay dead on the ground.
And others will come to the banks of the Somme, and they'll bury me when I am found.

The bullets went deep, now the sky looks so bleak, while I lay in the mud and the gore.
The pain is subsiding as I lay here dying - I'll see my two brothers no more.
With our lives just beginning our medals they're pinning on bodies they lay in the ground.
Come find me one day, as my gravestone will say: "He died and his country was proud."

Chorus:
Dear mother & father they're sending this letter to tell you our fighting is done.
We're no longer together, don't worry we're fine, we're buried out here at the Somme.
We remembered the promise we made dear old dad not to gamble or drink to excess.
To look after each other, remember you both, and treasure that bond we possess.
Three brothers we lay at the end of the day, in graves made of honour, not wood.
Now our life's at an end and tomorrow they'll send us away to grow poppies for good.

Keep looking after her, taking good care of her, just as you always have done,
Keep looking after our mum.
